125 years of the Worpswede artists’ colony – Bremen

125 years of the Worpswede artists’ colony

Worpswede 125 years jubilee

. Celebration 11.5.-14.9.2014

At Devil’s Moor – situated right on Bremen’s doorstep

BREMEN/GERMANY:  “How about we just stay here?” In 1889 this question came to be the starting point in Worpswede’s history as an artists’ colony
. And in 1895 the success of the founding group (Fritz Mackensen, Otto Modersohn, Hans am Ende, Fritz Overbeck, Heinrich Vogeler and Carl Vinnen) turned this once secluded farming village into a famous community overnight.

Worpswede continues to be a vibrant artists’ colony today and maintains many links with the Hanseatic city of Bremen. Situated on the edge of Devil’s Moor, just outside the city, it is a popular destination for day trips.

For the 2014 anniversary, the village – a fascinating triad of art, scenery and living space – will be welcoming visitors with a broad spectrum of events throughout the year, including major exhibitions, themed guided tours and special trips as well as the much-loved traditional regional markets, festivals, theatre productions and open-air events.

Musical, literary and culinary highlights round off the programme and can easily be combined with tourist activities, such as nostalgic journeys on a traditional peat barge or the Moor Express heritage railway, which runs between Bremen and Worpswede from May to early October.

Special hotel deal from just €114 per person: 2 nights in a double room incl
. buffet breakfast, 1 guided tour of the city centre (English/German), 1 ErlebnisCard (discovery card) and 1 travel guide per room. Bookable through Bremer Touristik-Zentrale.
