Baltic Identity in Opera

VI International Seminar of Opera Critics

On 12 November Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre shall welcome the Sixth International Seminar of Opera Critics “Baltic Identity in Opera”. As the cultural collaboration between the Baltic States is becoming more fruitful, it is now a perfect time for the critics of three neighbour countries to sit down, talk about the traditions of our operas and evaluate the differences and similarities between our present-day tendencies

.

This season the LNOBT launched its season with an exclusive exchange of productions that was carried out between LNOBT and the Estonian National Opera. The same project is to be repeated in the future, collaborating with the Latvian National Opera. LNOBT is also nurturing its connection with the Polish National Opera: the two companies are joined not only by the name of Polish opera composer Stanislaw Moniuszka who lived in Vilnius, but also by two other personalities – Mr. Krzysztof Pastor is the new Artistic Director of Ballet at the LNOBT, while current Opera Director of the Polish National Opera Mariusz Trelinski has directed M. Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov” a few years ago in Vilnius
. Many Lithuanian soloists have performed both in Latvia and Estonia. Despite that, these four neighbouring countries display very different traditions, politics of repertoire and operate in different situations. Same differences remain when it comes to expectations of the audiences and critics.

The Seminar shall be held at the Chamber Hall of the LNOBT and shall begin at 10:30 a.m. (registration is open from 10:00 a.m.). We shall be listening to four reports.
Musicologist, music critic and lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Music Mr. Kerri Kotta shall be reviewing newest productions and tendencies that circulate at the Estonian National Opera. Latvian operatic realities shall be revealed by the Head of the Latvian Music Information Centre Ms. Inara Jakubone. Participants of the Seminar shall also be given latest news from the Polish opera and ballet scene. At 2 p.m., after the coffee break, we shall invite everyone to a open space discussion “Baltic Identity in Opera”. Is this phenomenon possible – maybe we are so different that even geographical peculiarities don’t allow us to define ourselves as a culturally united entity? And then again, maybe we are more similar than we think we are?

In the evening we shall invite all participants of the seminar to enjoy LNOBT’s latest opera premiere – Giuseppe Verdi’s “Otello”, directed by Eimuntas Nekrošius and performed by Vaidas Vyšniauskas (internationally wellknown as Kristian Benedikt), Sandra Janušaitė, Dainius Stumbras, Laima Jonutytė and other soloists. Conductor – Martynas Staškus.

The Seminar shall be held in Lithuanian and English with a synchronous translation. The entrance to the event is free of charge.

The Seminar is supported by the Lithuanian Cultural Foundation
