under the patronage of Dr José Antonio Abreu

“Come! Into the open, friend!”: the opening line of Friedrich Hölderlin’s poem “Der Gang aufs Land”. Hölderlin invites us to set off to a place somewhere in the future where convention can be overcome and boundaries tested
. Hölderlin wrote his poem in around 1800. The dawn of the 19th century is the starting point of the Beethovenfest Bonn’s programme under the motto “Into the Open. Utopia and Freedom in Music”
. The social upheaval of the late 18th century was particularly reflected in Beethoven’s works, in which he managed to overcome the traditional compositional conventions and spread political ideals in his music

. Beethoven’s Ninth is the expression of his utopia.

is also the name of Peter Ruzicka’s compositional confrontation with Hölderlin. The Beethovenfest Bonn 2010 is giving Peter Ruzicka, as the “composer and artist in residence”, four roles in the festival; the highlight will be the world premiere of his work “…ÜBER DIE GRENZE…” (“…ACROSS THE BORDER…”) for cello and orchestra, with Daniel Müller-Schott as the soloist. Jörg Widmann was also commissioned for the first time as a composer by the Beethovenfest to confront Beethoven and the standard sonata form. His new work for violin and piano will be performed for the first time by Renaud Capuçon and Frank Braley during their Beethoven violin sonata cycle. The Beethovenfest Bonn, together with the Ensemble Resonanz, commissioned a third composition, this time from Jan Müller-Wieland. In consultation with the author he turned Roger Willemsen’s book “Der Knacks” into a musical melodrama; Willemsen himself will recite the words for the world premiere.

Breaking open concert rituals, braving new forms and offering innovative programmes are all goals of the Beethovenfest Bonn, which feels indebted to Beethoven’s cutting-edge role as a visionary, revolutionary and cosmopolitan. For that reason it develops exclusive concert ideas with artists who regularly and often in different combinations perform at the festival. Amongst the list of these musicians are Hélène Grimaud, as this year’s “artist in residence”, Paavo Järvi, Kent Nagano, Martin Grubinger, Sol Gabetta, Lisa Batiashvili, Sir Neville Marriner, András Schiff, Daniel Hope, Helmuth Rilling and Enoch zu Guttenberg.
