Boring GøteborgOperaens Danskompani in Oslo.

GøteborgOperaens Danskompani under its new management Adolphe Binder, is guesting Dansens Hus in Oslo with two performances.

Review by Henning Høholt

OSLO: I regret to say, if this is supposed to be today’s leading Swedish dance company, then this is not good enough. I experienced both productions as boring, characterized by repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition, without any reel dramaturgical idea, no progress

.

The first playful dance, Stijn Celis’ “Your Passion is Pure Joy to Me”, is earning a lot on the good music, a show where music plays a key role, specifically Nick Caves music. In the same way as the singer asks himself in his lyrics how it is possible to live with painful memories, leave choreographer Stijn Celis seven colorful dancers move with a carefree expression and investigate the possibility of finding hope and comfort after traumatic experiences. The dancers did a good job. But this was not exciting. Dancers who are walking into the scene, making his/hers/theirs small, or longer varietion, and walks out again. Next variation, repeat some of the same ideas, nothing new. Still it is in the programme mentioned Dramaturgy Armin Kerber.

The second ballet Sharon Eyal / Gai Behar: “Untiteled Black”. Looks instantly exciting, I thought, “Now going on something”, but by the excessively long opening sequence, which solely consisted in all repeated the same movements, while they moved into the beam of light that opens up more and more, as I lost enthusiasm. Unfortunately, this is not good enough. It is sad that a good choreographer, who we know well from before derails for himself and his career, by presenting something like that. The music was tiring to listen to and supplied not dance performance any. Talented costumes by Maayan Goldman, good lightdesign by Avi Yona Bueno (Bambi).

– Norwegian dance audience knows the Israeli shooting star Sharon Eyal through Carte Blanche‘s international success show “Corps de Walk”.

Goteborgsoperans Dance Company has as the first company in Sweden commissioned a work of this choreographer. The result was a collaboration with Gai Behar and performance “Untitled Black”. The performance is according to the program text, A mesmerizing dance works with many nuances and interpretation opportunities. Through its atmospheric and futuristic movement, framed by powerful music, dancers takes us into a fantastic parallel universe where DJ Ori Lichtiks live music plays a prominent role.  Which had its world premiere at the Gothenburg Opera in October 2012. Costumes: Catherine Voeffray. Light design Erik Berglund.

Both productions performed, was also characterized by not understanding to finish a work. This is a decision that needs to be taken. it does not help pouring in with more and more new ideas, when this does not add anything new. Limit Deadline art was not present.

“In other words, I had the feeling that the company was taking their mouth too full, when they try to tell the audience about a big, wonderful dance experience of international top quality when Goteborgsoperans Dance Company now occupied Oslo”.

From several visits to Gothenborg I have got the feeling that the Gøteborg Operaens Ballet was of good quality, and also that in their cooperaions with the splendid musical productions shown at the operahouse, where the ballet was participating was doing a good job. Unfortunately, this is not the feeling about the company I have today after their appearance at Dansens Hus in Oslo, Norway
