Christmas markets in Germany

GERMANY: The Christmas markets is a big hit in Germany, together with their Festivals, Beer, Sausages, exiting architecture, and this year highlightened by the 25 years jubilee of the end of the Berlin Wall.

RÜDESHEIM: The Christmas market of the nations adds an international dimension to the festive season in the old quarter of Rüdesheim, with 120 stalls from around twelve countries. At its heart is Europe’s largest Nativity scene, with surrounding landscaping. Elk furs and jam made from cloudberries are offered by the Finnish contingent, for example, whilst a Mongolian yurt adds an exotic, oriental feel. Other Rüdesheim highlights are romantic river cruises, cable car rides and the celebration of Christmas traditions on St. Thomas’ Night (20 December).

LEIPZIG: The Leipzig Christmas market dates back to 1458. This is one of the largest and most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany, with around 250 stalls on the city’s historical market square
. At weekends (1pm and 5pm) the sound of trumpeters rings out from the balcony of the Old Town Hall, adding to the festive atmosphere. Travel back through time at the historical market “Old Leipzig” on the Naschmarkt and try the regional specialities in the Finnish village on Augustusplatz. Kids especially enjoy the model railway, the elves’ workshop, the fairytale wood, the Christmas bakery and the fairground rides. Adults often meet to chat at the Christmas pyramid by the Nikolaikirche. The festive concerts performed by the Thomaner choir in the Thomaskirche are simply delightful.

QUEDLINGBURG: The magic of Christmas finds its way into the 1000 year old UNESCO world heritage town. Angels flit through the festively decorated alleyways with their thousand year old cobbles – the Christmas market has arrived in front of the town hall. Discover peculiarities hidden behind walls at “Advent in the courtyards”: on the three weekends leading up to Christmas the historical houses in the centre open the gates to their inner courtyards and offer up precious objects and rarities.

Advent is celebrated in true style in Quedlinburg.

The sounds of seasonal music and organ recitals ring out from the churches
. Christmas music can also be heard every day on Schlossberg hill, when a new half-timbered house opens its door to become part of the Quedlinburg Advent Calendar.

No less fascinating is the ‘Magic of Christmas’, when shop windows across the town display a lovingly assembled collection of old-fashioned dolls’ kitchens and toy grocery stores. Children streak through the fairytale wood. No one can get away from the magic of Christmas in Quedlinburg.
