PARIS: On February 16th, the Compagnie Julien Lestel was on the stage of the Opera of Massy, near Paris to dance the last creation of Julien Lestel, dancer and choreographer : Corps et Âmes
. The ballet was first created at the Theatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris on June 2011 and one can notice some modifications in the choreography since the Premiere.

Very interested in spirituality, as it is shown in his first work Les Âmes Frères, Julien Lestel creates here an ambitious ballet – for 11 dancers – about the conflicts between body and soul. One can observe a development in the choreographer’s style, with many references to his precedent works
.
The scenography is very sober and based on lights – made by Max Haas – letting space for the expression of the dancers
. There is also an important work in the portés and the union of the bodies that suggests an union between body and soul.

The ballet develops finely the different aspects of this union as it is composed by parts that are sometimes very energetic and sensual, almost animal, which alternate with parts more soft and light.

Gilles Porte dances in this Ballet, as he has done in each ballet of the company since its creation, he is the only permanent member with Julien Lestel. Furthermore Fanny Fiat,  she has been Sujet at the Opera de Paris.

The music, created by Karol Beffa accompanies finely the development of the ballet. The influence of the great composers is obvious as some parts suggest the Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky and others recall the Chorus by Johann S. Bach. The costumes, made by Virginie Merlinare sometimes very interesting, as the one which unifies the two dancers, suggesting strongly a body and its soul.

Julien Lestel is an atypical choreographer in the French choreographic landscape as his works is strongly based on classical technique and has references with Balanchine. It is very interesting to follow his evolution. With Corps et Âmes, he creates an ambitious ballet and shows a specific touch and style.

The company is in tour all around France and will be in Stockholm on June 5th to present The Rite of Spring
