Jakob Lenz is a chamber opera in one act by German composer Wolfgang Rihm
. Created in Hamburg in 1979, it has since become a reference work of contemporary lyrical repertoire, presented regularly on European opera stages.
This new production was created last November in Stuttgart where it was highly acclaimed by the press and the audience. The conductor Franck Ollu will lead the La Monnaie Symphonic Orchestra.
The staging has been entrusted to the German Andrea Breth, whose black and tormented world resonates powerfully with Lenz’s feverish and pessimistic state of mind. Familiar with the texts of modern theatre authors, this is the first time she will direct a contemporary opera
The cast reunites three beautiful male voices often heard at La Monnaie, which are distinguished by their vocal and scenic qualities: Georg Nigl in the role of Lenz, Henry Waddington as Oberlin and John Graham-Hall as Kaufmann.
The libretto was written by Michael Fröhling after Georg Büchner’s eponymous story, which recounts an episode in the life of the poet and writer Lenz – the renowned author of Die Soldaten that inspired Zimmermann’s opera – and is connected to the 18th century Sturm und Drang literary and artistic movement. In thirteen scenes, the work takes us into the troubled and morbid thoughts of Lenz, a character who is both a romantic  “wanderer” dear to Schubert and a crazy visionary.
Experiencing a deep crisis, Lenz wanders the snowy Vosges mountains, where he is welcomed by Pastor Oberlin who tries to rescue him with the help of his friend Kaufmann. The opera ends with the irreversible madness of Lenz.
Wolfgang Rihm receives the prestigious 2015 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, for his composition “IN-SCHRIFT 2”.
