Goudemalion. Jean-Paul Goude a rétrospective

It was in Paris 11 November 2011–18 March 2012

Les Arts Décoratifs is organising the first exhibition of Jean-Paul Goude’s work in Paris. Grace Jones is modell for some of the photos.

One of the most brilliant ‘image makers’of contemporary creation is proposing a retrospective and creative vision of his oeuvre encompassing all his areas of activity, from fashion and photography to advertising and the live event.

His entire forty-year career will be retraced in the nave at Les Arts Décoratifs, featuring his drawings, objects, music, films and photographs.

This major exhibition, conceived as a large installation, brings together his drawings, objects, music, photographe and films in a rhytmic chronological succession of intimate spaces and theatrical sequences, from his work with Grace Jones including the famouse Ektachrome cut-outs and his advertising campaign for Galeries Lafayette and Chanel. This is the largest collection of Goudes work ever seen (and many are seen here for the first time) – sketches, paintings, storyboards, elaborately staged photography, and documentation for stage and street shows.

The exhibition will of course evoke the Bicentenary of the French Revolution. Visitors will be welcomed in the reception hall by one of the gigantic waltzing ladies that caused such a sensation in the 1989 parade, then discover the monumental locomotive in the middle of the nave, installed on conveyor belt surrounded by numerous drawings.

In the Tuileries gallery, an ‘introspective’ evocation of Goude’s work will take the public on a chronological journey from his débuts at Saint-Mandé to his most recent work. Evoking his decisive encounters, collaborations, influences and souvenirs, this journey will be punctuated with the artist’s original creations, while in the alcoves on the rue de Rivoli side six theatrical yet intimate installations will reactivate the highpoints of his life and work.

The exhibition is filling up all the first floor in the one side of the Musee Les Arts Decoratif, and it is packed with all varieties representing the fantasyfull personality style that it seems Jean-Paul Goude has been working in. It is very interesting, funny, and it is a hit among the audience, which for shure will fill up the museum day after day. Up on entering the exhibition, we are been welcomed by a female sculpture in a colossal large black evening outfit. Entering the stairs an enorme locomotive is filling up the hall, and in the side rooms are installations with great viriety, and many sides of the talent presented. Even a live “Russian” look a like women in a white dress, speaking russian with her own mirror. Many small tv screens are presenting a lot of different parts of the many sided work, and here is inspiration for all.

The photos are absolutely first class, and the responsibility for the exhibition is by: Commissaire
- Béatrice SALMON, directrice des musées des Arts Décoratifs, commissaire général
- Amélie GASTAUT , conservatrice, collection Publicité, Les Arts Décoratifs

‘A vibrant visual autobiography … a sharp exploration of an exceptional artistic journey’ – i-D Magazine
‘An amusing, challenging book of arresting and memorable images’– The Sunday Times
‘A lavish trip into a world of hard glamour and mind-boggling imagery’– Wonderland

Jean-Paul Goude has triumphantly captured, time after time, the spirit of his age. A true publishing event – Goude has previously published only one book, now long out of print – this magnificent publication has been conceived and designed by the artist himself, and includes hundreds of little-known photographs and previously unseen drawings.

For more than thirty years, through drawing, poster design, photography, cinema, video and event design, Jean-Paul Goude has made an impression, in every sense, on our imagination – from the fops of the ’60s to the legendaryEsquire magazine of the following decade, from the New York of Andy Warhol and mixed cultures, to Grace Jones, for whom he was Pygmalion, from the spectacular Bicentennial Parade in Paris in 1989 to the celebration of ‘Style Beur’ (Arab Style), from ads for Kodak and Chanel to working with the latest supermodels.

This ‘made to order’ work is merely the flipside of Goude’s profoundly individual adventure, a journey (marked in particular by his celebration of a number of remarkable women) transformed into a sort of personal mythology. Life and work for Goude are inextricably linked, and this gives his work a particularly personal cachet, and lifts it above mere images. It is this crossover is revealed here for the first time.

Looking at different episodes in his life, returning to his encounters, passions, moments of disillusionment, drive and discovery, Goude traces the whole of his journey and all the stages of his working life, one of the most exceptional in recent decades.

A DVD, also devised by Goude using his work in film and from various theatrical events he has staged, accompanies the book.
