Maggio Musicale Fiorentino 2013

Programme of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino for the year 2013

By Fabio Bardelli

Daniele Gatti, will be conductiong in Florence during 2013.

FLORENCE: The new season of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino has been presented to the Press in Florence. Under this title we mean both the Maggio Fiorentino Festival, that shall take place on May 2013, and all the other performances of the rest of the year. To date, the situation of this Foundation isn’t at its best: not only because of financial problems, but also because of its management. Moreover, we have to take into account the many problems of completing the building works of the New Florence Opera House; in fact it was opened in December 2011 even if it was incomplete. The works are actually stopped because of lack of money, but new funds seem on their way to arrive, so that the House could be probably operative in May 2014.

The current situation of Italian culture is alarming, because public opinion and politicians consider it more or less just a “luxury”, something that nowadays Italy can’t allow to herself, because of the general crisis. I hope that our readers can reflect about the real meaning of these words, and how foolish they are. In other countries there also are many people who are in anxiety for Culture, Theatres and Music in Italy, the birth-place of opera, and particularly in Florence, a town beloved by people all over the world.

So, all the performances in 2013 will take place in old Teatro Comunale, when the the cleaning from asbestos will be finished. However the current management has put on a various programme, which will start in January with Wagner’s Walküre, staged by La Fura dels Baus
. We remember that next year it’s the second centenary from the Composer’s birth, as well as Giuseppe Verdi‘s. And Verdi’s Don Carlo will open the real Maggio Musicale Festival in May 2013.

In 2013 also the first centenary from Benjamin Britten‘s birth will be celebrated, and his Rape of Lucretia will be on stage, as well as a new work by George Benjamin, Written on skin. Then, there will be Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Verdi’s Macbeth in its first version, Il Farnace by Vivaldi and Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda that will be performed in a concertant form. More titles in programme are Offenbach’s Orphèe aux enferes, Pergolesi’s Serva padrona, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini.

Last but not least there will be many concerts, among the conductors we find the names of Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Daniele Gatti, Ton Koopman and others. Then ballets and other performances, waiting to move to New Florence Opera House, completed at last in May 2014, or at least this is what Florence’s public and music lovers do hope.
