Den svenske musikeren og kompositøren Mats Gustafsson får Nordisk Råds Musikkpris 2011.
Temaet for Nordisk Råds Musikkpris 2011 er
“En individuell musiker (instrumentalist eller vokalist) som har fornyet musikken med improvisasjon som et bærende element, og som gjør en innsats som er medskapende og viktig for formen, klangen og sammenhengen i det musikalske uttrykket
. Den nominerte skal ha gjort seg bemerket på den nordiske eller internasjonale scenen i løpet av det siste året (2010).”
Bedømmingskomiteen begrunner valget slik:
”Mats Gustafsson har i drøyt to tiår vært et av de store navnene i improvisasjonsmusikken. Med sitt nyskapende saksofonspill sprenger han konstant rammene for de musikalske sjangrene vi føler behov for å tildele musikk vi ikke har møtt før.
Uansett om han arbeider i Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentets avantgardistiske verden eller i den mere punkorienterte trioen The Thing, er Mats til stede med et kompromissløst uttrykk, et totalt nærvær, en slående energi og en høy grad av lydhørhet overfor medmusikerne sine

Mats fornyer ikke bare saksofonens uttrykk, han gjenoppfinner det og skaper nye verdener av musikk mellom tonene og bak støyen. Mats’ konsertvirksomhet er like omfattende og uoverskuelig som den store plateproduksjonen hans, som består av mer enn 200 titler. Nordisk råds musikkpris er på 350.000 DKK. Prisen overrekkes til Mats Gustafsson under Nordisk råds sesjon i København i begynnelsen av november.
Blant de 12 nominerte fra alle de nordiske land var to norske, saxofonisten Rolf Erik Nystrøm og sangeren Sissel Endresen.

The theme for the Nordic Council Music Prize 2011 is: “An individual musician (instrumentalist or vocalist), who has achieved innovation in music with improvisation as a bearing element, and whose efforts are co-creative and important for the form, sound and context of the musical expression. The nominees must have attracted attention on the national, Nordic or international stage during last year (2010).”

Mats Gustafsson (1964) has long been an international name in improvised music and is now honoured with the prestigious Nordic Council Music Prize 2011. This is what the Adjudicating Committee had to say: “For over two decades Mats Gustafsson has been one of the big names in improvised music. With his innovative saxophone playing he is constantly bursting the limits of the musical genres that we need to assign to music we have not met before
. Whether he is working in the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet’s avant-garde world, or in the more punk-oriented trio, The Thing, Mats is present with an uncompromising expression, a total presence, a striking energy and a high degree of sensitivity for his fellow musicians
