Spring 2015

MONTE CARLO/MONACO: The Monte Carlo schedule focuses on the spring, starting in January with “Wilhelm Tell” by Rossini and directed by Grinda
. After three nights in Monaco the whole cast moves to Theatre des Champ-Elysees in Paris.

In February “Pagliacci” is not as usual paired with “Cavalleria Rusticana” but with “A Florentine Tragedy” by  Zemlinsky – interesting choice.

The mainstream crowd gets a bite in March with Mozart. “Don Giovanni” will be directed by the upcoming Marguerite Borie and with Erwin Schrott in the lead.

Spring Season 2015

Hated by Stalin

The season comes to a mighty climax in April with a polish production of Shostakovich. “Lady Macbeth of Minsk” (“Katarina Ismailova”) was once fiercly attacked in Pravda with the headline ”Chaos instead of Music”. The writer may have been Stalin himself, and the composer remained persona non grata for a long time.

There are also concerts and solo recitals throughout the year, including Anna Netrebko. And the Monte Carlo Opera takes part in the traditional celebration on the Monaco National Day of November 19th. The warning  “through invitation only” means to be on the guest list from the Royal Palace

Jean-Luis Grinda will direct three new productions himself, giving only a small room for a global input. But his repertory shows a desire for variation outside the highlights of Verdi and Puccini. The audience should be grateful for a new perspective on the opera history,

Charles Garnier, the architect of the opera house in Paris, built the Casino in 1878. The “atrium,” paved in marble, is surrounded by 28 Ionic columns in onyx. It leads into the auditorium of the opera, called the “Salle Garnier,” which is decorated in red and gold, with a profusion of bas-reliefs, frescoes and sculptures. Here, for more than a century, outstanding international performances of opera, ballet and concerts have been staged. The “gaming rooms” comprise a succession of numerous rooms featuring stained glass windows, admirable decorations and sculptures, allegorical paintings and bronze lamps.

By the end of the nineteenth century, Charles Garnier was hired to build Monaco’s Opera House. The famous architect had gained recognition from his work for the Paris Opera House.

Sarah Bernhard inaugurated the new Salle Garnier in 1879. Between 1893 and 1951, Raoul Gunsbourg directed the Opera and built fame and prestige for Monaco’s Opera House
