FIRENZE/ITALY: Last concert of Florence’s Amici della Musica Association presented violinist Viktoria Mullova and pianist Katia Labèque playing a very interesting program: in the first part two wonderful compositions by Mozart and Schumann, followed in the second part by works from 1900s repertoire written by Takemitsu, Pärt and Ravel.

It was really a two-faced concert, considered how different the two guests are. Mullova doesn’t let room for emotions, and her playing could be described as icy-cold, with very little vibrato and a sound almost without expressivity. If we add the uniformity of her cavata and some problems in intonation and technique, we realize how her artistry is far away from pages as Mozart’s and Schumann‘s. Wonderful second movement from Mozart’s Sonata KV 526 is a page of an extraordinary expressivity and delicate balance between the two instruments, and here we could not perceive its intensity as it should be, but it was played in a superficial, not involving way. Somehow better in Schumann’s Sonata op. 105, Mullova didn’t go much further from a cold and dry rendition.

Katia Labeque

Pianist Katia Labèque isn’t cold and emotionless as Mullova, she plays with musicality but she doesn’t show many great ideas and we must consider that in a piano-violin duo if there isn’t a continuous exchange of ideas from an instrument to the other, it isn’t a good sign.

In the second part of the concert things went clearly better: there were very warm applause after Takemitsu and Pärt’s very evocative works and above all after the splendid rendering of very famous Ravel‘s Sonata, when the two soloists seemed to be awakened, showing ideas and balances that were missing in the first part of the concert.

The hall of Teatro della Pergola was very full of people and at the end they tributed a very warm success, with two encores.
