Violeta Urmana – 2012/2013 Season

MUNICH: This year’s summer festival season ends with Violeta Urmana singing Isolde opposite Ben Heppner as Tristan in Richard Wagner’s opera, at the Helsinki Festival on August 18 and 21 and at the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm on August 24 under the direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen in the multi-media version by Peter Sellars and Bill Viola.

After that excursion to the far north, the new season begins for her in Spain, with La forza del destino, by Giuseppe Verdi at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona  (October 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17 and 20, 2012), followed by the title role in Dmitri Tcherniakov’s highly acclaimed Paris production of Dimitri Shostakovich´s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk directed by Teodor Currentzis, with her husband Alfredo Nigro playing Malcolm (December 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20 and 23, 2012)

In the new year, this is followed by another title role in Tosca, by Giacomo Puccini in Bilbao Opera on January 19, 22, 25 and 28, 2013.

Between those two engagements she will begin 2013 with a Wagner Gala under the baton of Marek Janowski together with Annette Dasch and Stephen Gould on January 4 and 6 at the Salle Pleyel in Paris

. The same conductor will accompany her when she gives her debut as Brünnhilde in Richard Wagner’s Siegfried at the Berlin Philharmonie on March 1, 2013, followed by performances in the roles of Isolde at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin on March 14, 17 and 23, and Kundry on March 29 and April 1, both opposite Stephen Gould.

Violeta Urmana will sing the title role in Amilcare Ponchielli’s La Gioconda at the Opéra Bastille in Paris in May next year and together with Marcelo Alvarez as Enzo Grimaldo she will perform the role in Pier Luigi Pizzi’s production on May 2, 7, 10, 13, 16, 20, 23, 26 and 31.

Following on from that, she will take the mezzo part in the Verdi Requiem at the same venue on June 10 and 11, which represents an excursion into the soprano’s earlier repertoire.

Finally, Violeta Urmana will herald the 2013 festival season with a concertante performance of Tristan und Isolde under Semyon Bychkov on July 27, 2013 at the BBC Proms in London.
