When West Side Story opened as a musical in New York on 26 September 1956, during the Golden age of Broadway, the critics had no inkling of the phenomenon in the making. The creative team, Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents, had been working for many years on staging an updated version of Romeo and Juliet, without however bringing the project to fruition
