SYNOPSIS:
Salzburg (Austria) just before the Second World War, at the time of the Anschluss.
Maria Rainer enters a convent, but does not appear to be cut out for life in a nunnery. On the advice of the Mother Superior, she becomes governess to the seven children belonging to Captain Georg von Trapp, a tyrannical widower who lives in a sumptuous villa on the outskirts of Salzburg. Contrary to the captain’s ideas about education, Maria gives free rein to her imagination and is all for music and giving the children their freedom.
On his return from a trip with his fiancée, Baroness Elsa Schraeder, and Max Detweiler, a friend, the captain discovers that his children have formed a choir. The following days see the development of the Captain’s feelings for Maria. The latter secretly loves him. They confess their love for one another and decide to get married

Refusing to collaborate in any way with the Nazis, his only goal is to flee the country with his family. Finally, the von Trapps make their escape during the festival, firstly by being hidden by the sisters at Maria’s former convent, then by heading for Switzerland through the mountains.
About Sound of Music and Rodgers and Hammerstein:
The final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein, The Sound of Music scored a triumph on Broadway after opening in November 1959, the “golden age” of musical comedy being at its height. And after the show’s closure following 1443 performances, the film by Robert Wise (West Side Story’s co-director with Jerome Robbins) made the autobiographical story of Maria Augusta von Trapp world-famous thanks to Julie Andrews’ portrayal in 1965.
Rodgers and Hammerstein had begun their legendary partnership with Oklahoma! in 1943. Previously, Richard Rodgers had been composing musicals in collaboration with Lorenz Hart (Babes in arms, Pal Joey…). While Oscar Hammerstein, who had teamed up with Jerome Kern, had been responsible for writing Show Boat, which was to become the founding cornerstone for the “Broadway” style of musical comedy.
With nine collaborations on stage productions tucked under their belt (including Carousel, South Pacific and The King and I), Rodgers and Hammerstein were to become one of the most prolific and recognised teams on Broadway. Their partnership ended only with the death of the librettist in 1960, just after the triumph of The Sound of Music.
