“- What should the opera world have been without Giuseppe Verdi?” – The only operahouse in the world (as far as i know) where the artistic management not have found space for celebrating Verdi in its program for 2013 is The Norwegian National Opera in Oslo
. Therefore it is good to be working around in all of Europe, so that I, as Verdi lover, can get Verdi other places.

After landing in Paris from Vienna this afternoon, I went directly to Théâtre des Champs Élysées where the Operahouse in Torino, Teatro Regio Torino guested with a concertversion of Don Carlos, for me one of the famouse Verdi Operas in his repertoire
. The version performed here was the italian version from 1884. With text by Achille de Lauziéres and Angelo Zanardin, after Joseph Méry and Camille du Locle.

Gianandrea Noseda, one of the world best operaconductors today. Music Director of the Teatro Regio in Turin (TRT)
Laureate Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic
Chief Guest Conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra
Victor De Sabata Guest Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
Principal Conductor of the Orquesta de Cadaqués
Artistic Director of the Stresa Festival.

It was a success. Leaded by one of the most famouse operaconductors in the world today Gianandrea Noseda, it became a highlight in the operaseason in 2013, which also is the 100 years jubilee for Theatre Champs Élysées. Noseda knows his job, his material, and most of all, he can listen, he has the wonderful fingertip feeling and musicality about he tempi and to form the details which is so importent, to make it a success. Therefore this evening with a star cast became something extraordinary.

Well, it is not easy to be an operasinger today, and cold weather in one city and warm weather in an other place makes it difficult for the singers to keep their voices away from getting a cold, therefore, when it was announced, first that Ramón Vargas was indisposed, because of a cold, but that Stephano Secco was in the house waiting to take over if Vargas didn´t feel well, the audience was dissatisfied, then it was announced that the same was the situation with Barbara Frittoli, who was supposed to sing Elisabeth de Valois. But that they both have desided to sing and do their best. It went well.

Both the singers was excellent. For me the two highlights of the evening was the bass Ildar Abdrazakov as king Philip II, his big Aria: “Ella giammai m’amò”. When whe is alone, the King, in a reverie, laments that Elisabeth has never loved him, that his position means that he has to be eternally vigilant, and that he will only sleep properly when he is in his tomb in the Escorial, became the big hit of the evening. Ildar Abdrazakov sung it extraordinary beautiful, and the cooperation with the conductor Gianandrea Noseda was a school exempel on how this shall be performed. This continued, as the operaaudience knows so well, with Princesse Ebolis grand resitative and aria “O don Fatale”, which starts after she has confessed to Elisabeth de Valois, not only that she stole Elisabeth´s casket, brought it to King Philip II,  because she loved Carlos and he rejected her, but, worse, she has also been the mistress of the King. Daniela Barcellona as Princess Eboli was wonderful!!! Another highlight in this evenings performance. A detail, her evening dress in dark blue chiffon was too short. It should be added 20 cm to the lenght, then it will be great.

Giuseppe Verdi, composer of Don Carlos,

The fifth importent singer this evening was the great baryton Ludovic Tézier as Rodrigo, Marquis de Posa. Tezier is one of the opera worlds best barytons today in his repertoire, and it is always a pleasure to enjoy him. Marco Spotti sung the Grand Inquisitore, he has a good voice, and stage appearance, but I would like to wait 10 years to hear him in this role next time, then he will be very good, as he has the vice, but, for me, he is too young for this role.

Orchestre du Teatro Regio Torino and its 74 persons choire played and sung wonderful. The choire is leaded by Claudio Fenoglio.

Production of Théâtre des Champs Élysées.

This concert performance will be send in France Musique May 11. 2013 at 19.00.
