Violeta Urmana in Wagner anniversary year

Debut as Brünnhilde

By Ruth Wischmann

LONDON, BERLIN, PARIS: Violeta Urmana gave a foretaste of a new role she will be playing more often in coming years when she gave a stunning performance of an excerpt from Wagner’s Götterdämmerung at the beginning of January in Paris. Her reading of Brünnhilde’s final song under Marek Janowski was hailed by press and audience alike. She will make her debut as Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Siegfried under the same conductor on March 1 in a concertante performance in the Berlin Philharmonie with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin.

In 2013, Wagner will be at the centre of Violeta Urmana‘s artistic activities

. Following on from her first appearance as Brünnhilde, she will also play Kundry and Isolde in Berlin, and in July she will appear as Isolde at the BBC Proms in London under Semyon Bychkov.

In this year celebrating the bicentenary of Wagner‘s birth, Violeta Urmana will be concentrating on one of her favourite composers, whose roles she has sung to great acclaim worldwide. At the same time, the addition of Brünnhilde to her repertoire surely marks the pinnacle of Wagnerian achievement.
