George Enescu International Festival. Bucarest, Romania: 10-15 th September 2011.

Every two years, the Romanian Athenaeum celebrates the maestro by hosting the George Enescu International Festival.

Few would imagine that since 1958 Bucharest has played host to some of the most influential soloists and orchestras of the day. It is a tradition that continues this summer as visitors can feast on 47 soloists, 36 orchestras, 10 operas and ballets, and 6 choirs along with 24 opuses from famed Romanian composer George Enescu
. Performances take place between 30 August and 26 September at venues throughout the capital city. Britain’s daily The Guardian exclaimed “The mighty Salzburg festival now has a rival.” Indeed, elite contemporary performers including the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Il Giardino Armonico, Hallynk, Tiberghien, Ugorski, Uri Caine and Yo-Yo Ma will all be in attendance.

Muzeul National George Enescu. The museum, housed in the Cantacuzino Palace, displays documents and various objects that belonged to the great Romanian composer and violinist George Enescu (1881-1955), including a Bach music collection he received as a gift from Queen Elisabeta of Romania. A world-class violinist, Enescu studied at the Vienna Conservatory, where he met German composer Johannes Brahms and where he also gave his first concerts.

In Paris, Enescu graduated from the French Conservatory in 1899
. His best-known works, theRomanian Rhapsodies, earned him national and international fame. In 1936, hisOedipe tragic opera premiered in Paris and Enescu was awarded the French Legion of Honor award for the composition. A member of the Romanian Academy and corresponding member of the Institute of France, George Enescu was the teacher of renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin.
