The production of Georges Bizets Opera Carmen, staged by Andrejs Zagars, that the Latvian National Opera in Riga is presenting right now, they have chosen to renew it by letting the history go on at Cuba

This idea in a talented scenography by Monika Pormaia and with good “autenthic” inspired costumes by Kristine Jurjane is very well done, and when it is done so well as here in Riiga, its is a great idea to do this change. The idea to let the “smuling” be placed at the beach in Havana, and that it is people who wants to run away to America, which is the case. The second that Escamillio is not a bullfighter, but a boxing star, as this is the most popular sport at Cuba. The performance is a big success for the operahouse.

Nora Sourouzjan is a first class, sensual Carmen, and her Don José is the young very well singing

Maxim Aksenov. A wonderful young tenor which during the opera is being better and better ending up with a remarkable crescendo. He is a tenor that I am looking forward to follow in the future, as he has all possibilities for a big carriere. The only thing. I don’t hope he is starting singing many more too heavy roles too early. I hope he will take his time. Don Jose is an extremely demanding role, and it can spoile a good voice to accept so dramatic roles too early. But Maxim Aksenov did it very well as Don José, We believed in him. In addition, I like when it is a young tenor as Don José because, then the casting management has done a good job.

Janis Apeinis was brilliant as Escamillio. Micaela was sung by Aira Rurane, which was good in the middle part, but din´t have the high tunes. I would have preferred to have had Inga Sjubovska, who in this cast was first class singing Frasquita as Micaela. As Mercedes we enjoyed Andzella Goba, a good choise for that role. Zuniga was Krisjanis Norvelis, a beautiful bass.As Dancairo and Remenando Nauris Puntulis and Andris Lapins.

carmena-janaitis-9043Carmen is not only Georges Bizet’s most popular work; it is also one of the most performed operas of all time. The tragedy unfolds when Jose’s obsessive, destructive love for Carmen is confronted with her longing for unconditional freedom – a freedom for which she is willing to pay any price, even her own life. With this production, which is set in present day Cuba, the LNO takes a fresh look at the story.
