Peggy Guggenheim

LUCCA: Peggy Guggenheim was one of the most important personages of the Twentieth Century

. She was born in New York in 1898 from a rich jewish family

. She was not only a high cultured person, but a woman of arts: extraordinary collector, art patron and owner of a gallery herself. She was a passionate protagonist of the culture world in Europe and overseas starting when she was young until her death, in 1979.

Peggy Guggenheim was a woman of character, she had a great intuition for arts, we can say she really marked her time

. She was paladin of avant-garde in Europe, and among her art collections, some are considered among the most important in the world.

Part of the paper drawings that she collected and that are part of  the Guggenheim Collection, are now on exhibition in Lucca, Italy, in a beautiful building in the centre of the town, sorrounded by old roads and characteristic corners.

What we see is of great effect: Alechinsky, Arp, Calder, De Kooning, Ernst, Fontana, Hundertwasser, Kandinsky, Kupka, Man Ray, Masson, Matta, Mondrian, Moore, Picasso, Richter, Rivera, Sironi, Tancredi, Tanguy, Tobey, Vedovaare the artists.

It’s impossible to be indifferent  in front of these works, that cover a large part of the Twentieth Century, acquired by Guggenheim in different periods of her life. Some of them are on display for the first time, and the different styles are in some case very original and give a rather complete view of the many artistic trends in the last Century.

The exposition, curated by Maurizio Vanni,is in collaboration with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
