PISTOIA/ITALY: On the hills that rise on Montalese road a few kilometers from Pistoia, in the suburb of Santomato stands the beautiful Villa di Celle, with its structure that in its present form dates back at the end of the 17th century, built according to the will of its owner, Cardinal Carlo Agostino Fabroni from Pistoia.
The adjoining garden was transformed into an authentic “english garden” by architect Giovanni Gambini in the mid-19th century, a large park that cleverly uses torrent Brana to build a small lake with a small island.
Since 1970 the historic Villa and the whole Tenuta are owned by Giuliano Gori, a textile entrepreneur from Prato, who turned his magnificent property in an authentic modern art collection.
Particularly fond of “environmental art”, Mr Gori built in the years a masterpiece on the subject: art pieces, perfectly integrated in the park, among the valuable old trees, in the meadows, on the banks of the stream that runs through it, which are not only a background but natural features that become a part of the artwork itself.
The collection has grown over the decades, currently also includes works of art placed in some rooms of the Villa and its outbuildings.
The owner as a authentic patron contacted the artists, hosted them, and together they chose the right place for the work of art that would become part of the collection.
This collection has always aroused the curiosity and interest of artists and art critics all over the world, being one of the most important private collections of Italy, which houses works by important Italian and foreign contemporary artists in a really fascinating natural setting.
Among the artists we can find Richard Serra, Robert Morris, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Alice Aycock, Daniel Buren, George Trakas, Alberto Burri, Fausto Melotti, Sol Lewitt, Gianni Ruffi, Loris Cecchini and Robert Morris.
