After several years of preparation, on April 30 Shanghai is finally ready for the grand opening of the biggest World Exposition in history. Norway is one of 192 nations represented and our self built pavilion is now prepared to welcome more than 3 million visitors from all over the world!

Echoing the Expo theme “Better City, Better Life”, Norway’s contribution at Expo seeks to explore the city dweller’s contact with nature. Norway is one of 43 countries with self built pavilion, and through the concept “Norway. Powered by Nature” it focuses on how nature can be a source to a better urban environment and well-being through adventures, inspiration and clean energy. In a country where most constructions are built in steel and concrete, the Norwegian Pavilion will definitely attract attention among the Chinese visitors. The pavilion is built around 15 pillars of laminated wood that function as models of Norwegian trees
. The trees, all of which have four branches that vary from 5 to 15 meters in height, come together to make up an entirety housing different Norwegian landscapes. Be it the sea, the mountain or the forest, Norwegian cities all exist in a close relationship to nature, and this closeness is something that will become apparent when the pavilion takes the visitor on a small journey through different Norwegian sceneries. With Norwegian nature as a backdrop, the pavilion appears as a green oasis that will leave you full of impressions and give new ideas regarding sustainable development and active use of nature in an urban picture.

Every day from 7 to 11 pm, during the whole Expo period, the pavilion will transform into a magical garden. Music and lights from more than 400 spotlights, 100 TV screens and hidden loudspeakers will give you a multimedia experience of a lifetime. “The Norwegian Evening” truly enables the Norwegian Pavilion to differentiate from other pavilions and will give visitors a unique experience of Norwegian nature, the northern lights and Norwegian life.

During these six months, numerous activities will be held at the Norwegian Pavilion. However, May 28 is Norway’s own day on Expo, and this will be celebrated with an exciting cultural program. Some of the performing artists will be world famous singer Sissel Kyrkjebø and Secret Garden. Secret Garden is one of Norway’s biggest cultural exports to China and Asia. Known for lyrical songs like Nocturne and You Raise Me Up, they have millions of fans across China. HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway will be one of the prominent guests attending Norway Day.

Norway’s participation on Shanghai World Expo aims to strengthen the Sino-Norwegian long term cultural, political and economic relationship. Expo 2010 is a great opportunity to establish new relations and strengthen existing bonds between Norway and China in areas such as culture, industry, trade, tourism and politics. With a China that holds an increasingly more important role in the global picture, Shanghai World Expo is a great arena for showcasing Norwegian ideas and culture to an both an international and Chinese audience.

. During the next 6 months over 70 million visitors are expected to visit the Expo site, where a total of 242 participating countries and organizations will exhibit their approach to the official theme “Better City, Better Life”. This concept addresses important issues regarding the development of the future big cities, such as urbanization, harmonious existence between different cultures, sustainable economic development, environment and research. These urban challenges are especially important in today’s world, where the city environment often is challenged by rampant urbanization. The World Expo is hence a perfect arena for displaying sustainable development solutions and cross-cultural cooperation.
