The ballet Don Quixote, with choreography by Alexander Gorsky (1902) based on the choreographic idea by Marius Petipa with Ludwig Minkus famous music was premiered by Saint Petersburg Ballet in Paris, Saturday 31
. October 2009. The scenography and costumes by Viatchslav Okunev was beautifully. But for the toreadors, matadors and Basilio the shirts was spoiling the silhouettes for the dancers, and didn´t look good to dance with.

But the ending Pas de deux, without any coda for the whole company, became a success for the two leading dancers Irina Koleshnikova as Kitri and her Basilio, danced by Yourij Kovaliov. The title role Don Quixote was perfect played by the character dancer Pavel Kholoimenko, and his Sancho Panza by Dmitri Lysenko, who’s dance with the girls in the first act was entertaining.

In this version of the ballet, the performance has been added with one extra scene, after the ending coda at the square. In this extra scene it is like there is being celebrated the wedding of Kitri and Basilio where the famous grand pas de deux is the most important part, and therefore is missing in the original last scene. But to fill this scene out, some parts is being repeated from earlier in the ballet. It seems a bit strange.  Especially, when it wasn´t necessary to do it.

During all the ballet Irina Koleshnikova danced wonderful. For me, who now have seen her as Odette/Odile, Giselle and Kitri, the role as Kitri in Don Quixote is the best role for her? I find that she has the temperament virtuosity and the technique for this role. Her pirouettes in the Grand pas de deux were fantastic. The same it was for Yourij Kovaliov, who also showed some really great jumps and fouettes in the Grand pas de deux. It too seemed to me like he in the very end, was feeling at home on the stage. His young charm suited the role well, and he was a very safe partner for the ballerina. In the beginning he was having much too high arms, perhaps he was nervous? But this became better during the evening. Basilio is a very demanding role.

The Night at the Dryad Garden became the most successfully scene in the ballet. Because that the female dancers in saint Petersburg Ballet are good. In that scene we enjoyed Astkhik Ohannesyan as Queen of the Dryads’, and Anna Samostrelova as Amor. in addition to Irina Koleshnikova as Dulcinea/Kitri.  All the Dryads’ were good.

Unfortunately the Toreador who showed some great artistic postures as Toreador, but he couldn´t follow up with dance at the same level. Furthermore mostly of the young male dancers, except a very few ones, don´t have the quality as dancers, as you expect for a company, who is advertising itself as being a world famous company. In addition, when all the not good dancers shall dance together, it don’t help to play all the music too fast, so that the audience don’t catch that they are not good enough. Further one, too much arms to hide that there is not any dance going on don’t help. – The audience sees that. It is making it worst. “Sometimes it looked like amateurs”. What kept it alive was that there was a good atmosphere on stage and that the actors were happy to perform and shared it with the audience. In Paris is a particular fastidious audience, and if a company isn´t good they observe it immediately.

The orchestra was during the performance sometimes quite good, but not always. During the ballerinas Spanish dance with castanet’s, there was too much noise from the castanet’s and  tambourine’s from the percussion corner, the meaning is that they shall make the accents, not making noise all the time. This the conductor should see too. Conductor is Vadim Nikitin.

“We wish Saint Petersburg Ballet all the best. We do know that it is a hard world to compete in. The company are on the right way”.
