As everyone knows, (?) Gianni Schicchi is the third part of Trittico by Giacomo Puccini, whose première was in New York in 1918, with baritone Giuseppe De Luca in the title role. Librettist Giovacchino Forzano (who was even a distinguished stage director and dramatist, born in Borgo San Lorenzo not far from Florence in 1883) found inspiration for this interesting libretto in a scene of Canto XXX from Inferno by Dante Alighieri, who puts Gianni Schicchi in the eighth ring, where the fraudulent counselors are punished. Performing Gianni Schicchi, a comic opera, separated from the other two operas of Il Trittico (which is what happened in Florence in this occasion) is a questionable idea and a theatrical mistake, lacking the contrast with the other two operas, the tragic Tabarro and the mystical, very refined Suor Angelica. In fact their caracteristics exalt the differences giving vigour and pointing out each other.
Nevertheless this fact is rather common; Gianni Schicchi being a short opera it can be combined with some other short works. In this occasion in Florence (an emergency stage was built just behind the orchestra, since the the great hall of New Opera House is still a work in progress) it was performed with a ballet on Francis Poulenc‘s music, Il Mago di Oz (The Wizard of Oz). The story is inspired to a famous children novel written by the American writer L. Frank Baum, that inspired even a famous movie in 1939, starring Judy Garland.
The ballet in this occasion was staged by choreograph Francesco Ventriglia, who has changed its setting, and rather well performed by the skilled company MaggioDanza. As a whole it was rather pleasant, staging the story with grace and poetry, with colourful costumes and an almost non-existent scene, only a poor back-cloth with some projections. The dancers of MaggioDanza were good, the orchestra was conducted in a rather effective way by Andriy Yurkevych.

The mise-en-scène of Gianni Schicchi (the only author of stagement and costumes was Mario De Carlo) was rather traditional, centered above all on the beutiful costumes realized by Casa Cerratelli; the scene was almost non-existent, only a back-cloth with a projection of the original scene designed by Galileo Chini for the first performance of Gianni Schicchi in 1918

. The singers direction was unfortunately too affected and farcical, the characters being dangerouly close to shouting and gesticulating rough caricatures, with a questionable lack of taste.
The singers globally were under an average level, as in a provincial performance, really under a medium level that would be required to a theatre such as Florence Theatre in any occasion. The main character was Donato Di Stefano, who sang the part of Gianni Schicchi also showing almost a real physique du rôle and his stage skill. Conductor Gaetano d’Espinosa did all it was in his power to complete the opera.
Ultimately it was a rather disappointing performance, with a rather pleasant ballet and an opera mediocrely performed: unfortunately the year 2012 ends for the Florence Theatre with these not positive comments. We hope that 2013 shall bring many high level productions, Florence music fans need them.
